February 2012:

The DL with Daniel & Lee

It is hard to believe that we are already in the second week of February and well into pageant season.  We started 2012 with a bang when we were honored to have the reigning Miss Gay America, Kirby Kolby in the Valley of the Sun.  We want to send a special thank you to Celia Putty and Barbra Seville for arranging this MGA Tour and for allowing Phoenix to get to know Miss Gay America before he arrives in August for Miss Gay Arizona America. We started that week at the Golden Wighead Awards at Karamba’s.  It was a great show with people from Phoenix and Tucson coming to celebrate the accomplishments of entertainers throughout the year.  We were surprised and very happy when Miss Gay Arizona America won “Best Drag Event of the Year”.  We want to thank everyone who voted for us and expect an out of this world experience at Miss Gay Arizona America 2012 on August 4th and 5th.

That same weekend we had our first preliminary to Miss Gay Arizona America, Miss Gay Copper City America.  This pageant is promoted by Joey Saputo, who is celebrating his 5th year as promoter.  There were two contestants competing for the title of Miss Gay Copper City America, Nevaeh McKenzie and Masquerade.  Both did a tremendous job in all five categories and in the end, Nevaeh McKenzie was crowned Miss Gay Copper City America 2012.  We would also like to congratulate Diva on a spectacular year as Miss Gay Copper City America 2011.  Diva has been a great symbol of excellence in both Tucson and Phoenix and we expect great things from him!  Nevaeh and Masquerade are the first two contestants on their way to Miss Gay Arizona America 2012.

We would also like to congratulate the winners of the triple Miss Gay Arizona USofA crowning.  Saellah V, Khloe V. Monroe and Onyx are all on their way to nationals and we wish them the best of luck.

Why Miss Gay America?

We get asked this questions many times.  Why should I run for Miss Gay America?  What sets it apart from all the other pageant systems in the state or country?  The Miss Gay America system was founded in 1972 by Jerry Peak.  It has been a symbol of excellence in this country for over 40 years.  Miss Gay America prides itself on being the best of the best and bringing the true female impersonation art form to the stage.  There are often times when contestants will ask, “If I become Miss Gay Arizona America, will I not be able to drink, smoke or swear in public?”  “I would run but there are so many rules and regulations that I would have to remember.”  FACT: There are many rules and regulations associated with the Miss Gay America system.  Most of these rules are in place to make sure the pageant, contestants, promoter and the reigning titleholder have the best experience and uphold the symbol of excellence.  MYTH: If you are a titleholder within the Miss Gay America system you will no longer be able to drink, smoke or swear.  Being Miss Gay Arizona America or Miss Gay America is a job.  The MGA system makes it very clear that when competing for these titles, you are essentially applying for a job. We ask that you act respectably and responsibly when wearing the crown or representing Miss Gay America but we are all adults and are able to make our own decisions. The high regard in which The Miss Gay America system is held speaks for itself.  We ask all contestants, new or veteran, to research the system that they are looking to enter, do your homework and know what the system stands for and who has paved the way to ensure you have the best experience possible! So, why Miss Gay America?  Because it creates and supports excellence on all levels from beginners to seasoned entertainers and if you want it and work for it will set you on a path to excellence.

Our 2nd preliminary, Miss Gay Metropolis America 2012, is right around the corner.  Please join us on Sunday, February 12 at BS West as we honor Nevaeh McKenzie and  crown the newest member of the Metropolis America family.  For more information contact the promoters, Richie Black (Celia Putty) and John Allard-Lawson.

Until next time…

January 2012:

The DL with Daniel & Lee

Welcome to the new and improved Web site for Miss Gay Arizona America!  We wanted to make sure that people throughout Arizona and around the country would be able to keep up with the happenings of the 2012 Miss Gay America State Preliminary of the Year!  Thank you to Bill Brooks and Richie Black (Celia Putty, MGAA 2011) for creating a new and improved look for the 2012 season.

We cannot believe that the 2012 season is less than a month away.  It just seems like yesterday that we were celebrating the year of Celebrity Starr, Miss Gay Arizona America 2010 and crowning the newest member to the Miss Gay Arizona family, Celia Putty.  After Miss Gay Arizona we had a lot of work to do to get both Celia and Tyra Marie, 1st alternate to Miss Gay Arizona America, prepared for Miss Gay America 2012.  The road to Miss Gay America is always filled with fundraisers, prop building, rehearsals and numerous preparations.  Celia and Tyra did an amazing job working together to make sure they were as prepared as possible for Miss Gay America.  Team Arizona did some amazing things this year at Miss Gay America and we couldn’t be prouder of the effort and unity we created the whole week.  Thank you to: Gary, Bill, Grecia, Diamond, Corey, Buddy, Joey M, Kathy, Joey S, John, Nick, Ben, Ron, Sue Nami, Duane, Larry, Angela and Barbra for all sharing this special week with us and for making Team Arizona shine!

Miss Gay Arizona America walked away with a couple of awards that we are proud to share with the entire community.  We were given “Best Venue of the Year” for our final night venue at Tempe Center for the Arts.  We were also nominated and won “Best State Preliminary of the Year.”  We were so excited to be recognized for the hard work and dedication we put into our pageants every year and want to send a big THANK YOU to Coti Collins, Miss Gay America 2011, for believing in us.  Both Celia and Tyra represented the Miss Gay Arizona America family to the fullest the entire week at Miss Gay America.  Tyra placed within the Top 25 and captivated the audience and judges with her “Westside Story” talent and emotional Kathy Bates solo talent.  Celia placed in the Top 10 (only 2 other former Miss Gay Arizona’s have placed in Top 10, Angela Dodd and Mikaila Kay) and placed 9th overall.  Celia’s sense of passion, humor and sophistication is what the Miss Gay America system is all about and he represented the crown with all of the above the entire week at Miss Gay America.

Congratulations to Kirby Kolby, Miss Gay America 2012 for capturing the title and joining an amazing group of former Miss Gay Americas.  We are honored to have Kirby joining us for a Tour of Phoenix in January.  Thank you to Barbra Seville, the Rock, Crusin’ 7th, FRIENDS and Karamba’s for making this possible.  Kirby will be at Karamba’s for the Golden Wighead awards on Wednesday, January 11; Friday, January 13 at FRIENDS for Freaky Friday with Celia Putty; Saturday, January 14 at The Rock with Barbra Seville; and on Sunday, January 15 for the kickoff to the 2012 season, Miss Gay Copper City America 2012!

We are so excited for the upcoming year and to see Celia Putty take the reigns as Miss Gay Arizona America!  Celia knew what it took to become Miss Gay Arizona and did not let anything stand in the way of becoming something he had dreamt about for years.  This shows dedication, passion and a commitment to a goal and a dream.  If your goal is to become Miss Gay Arizona America, do not let anything or anyone stop you.  Start today by acting like you already are Miss Gay Arizona.  Do your research on the Miss Gay America system and the legacy that has paved the way.  We will be here for any support, advice or direction you may need but the majority of the work belongs to you…in the words of Coti Collins, “do not let anyone determine your self-worth.”  Go out and live your dream and remember to dream big!

For those of you interested in being Miss Gay Arizona America, check out the front page of our website for more information on our preliminaries to qualify for a spot at Miss Gay Arizona America. Miss Gay Arizona America is one of the most prestigious titles in the state and we look forward to seeing who will follow in the footsteps of some of Arizona’s amazing entertainers.

Until next time, have a safe and happy new year!
